Smart Ways to Save Money on Plumbing and Electrical Work

Electrical and plumbing work constitutes about 12% to 15% of your total construction budget. While you should never compromise on safety, there are intelligent ways to optimize these costs.

Electrical Savings

• Centralize the Distribution Board: Place your main DB box centrally to minimize the length of heavy wire circuits running to different rooms.
• Standardize Switches: Use premium modular switches for the living room and master bedroom, but use standard (yet branded) modular switches for utility areas, kitchens, and guest rooms.
• Pre-plan Conduits: Ensure all AC, TV, and internet conduits are laid inside the walls before plastering. Cutting walls later ruins the structural integrity and doubles the labor cost.

Plumbing Savings

• Back-to-Back Bathrooms: If possible, design your floor plan so that bathrooms share a common wall, or are stacked directly above each other on multiple floors. This drastically reduces the length of PVC/CPVC pipes required.
• Avoid Concealed Cisterns on a Tight Budget: Concealed flush tanks look great, but they are expensive and require a false wall. Standard wall-mounted commodes are cheaper to buy and much easier to maintain.
