Roofing Cost Calculator: Estimate Shingles, Underlayment & Materials

August 13, 2026•By HDE Editorial Team

Replacing a roof is one of the most expensive and critical maintenance tasks a homeowner will face. Whether you are dealing with storm damage, old age, or upgrading your home's curb appeal, understanding exactly how much material you need is the first step to avoiding contractor markups and overpaying for materials.

Our new USA Roofing Cost Calculator is designed specifically for American homes using architectural asphalt shingles and standard wood framing.

How Roofing Materials Are Measured

In the USA, roofing contractors do not quote jobs in square feet. They quote jobs in "Squares."

  • 1 Square = 100 square feet of roof area.
  • 1 Bundle of Shingles covers approximately 33.3 square feet.
  • 3 Bundles of Shingles = 1 Square.

If your ground floor area is 2,000 sq ft, your actual roof area is significantly larger due to the pitch (slope) and overhangs.

Why Roof Pitch Matters

The steepness of your roof drastically affects the amount of material required.

  • A standard 6/12 pitch (medium slope) requires multiplying your base footprint by roughly 1.16.
  • A steep 12/12 pitch (very steep, common in Victorian or A-Frame houses) requires multiplying the footprint by 1.41.

Our Roofing Cost Estimator automatically does this math for you based on your selected slope!

Don't Forget the Underlayment and Nails

A roof is an entire system, not just shingles. You will also need:

  1. Underlayment: Synthetic felt paper that protects the wood decking. One standard roll covers about 4 squares (400 sq ft).
  2. Coil Nails: Generally, contractors use 4-6 nails per shingle. A standard box of 1.25-inch coil nails will cover roughly 20 squares of roofing.
  3. Drip Edge & Flashing: Metal perimeter trimming to direct water into your gutters and prevent wood rot.
